Cost of student life in Istanbul 2026–2027: accommodation, transport and budget

How much does a student in Istanbul spend per month? Private dorm prices by district, the student transport card and practical tips to save money.

Tuition is only part of the budget. In Istanbul the biggest cost is usually accommodation. We collected the 2026–2027 prices reported in the Turkish press and converted them into manat.

Rate: 1 USD ≈ 50 TL, 1 TL ≈ 0.034 AZN (November 2026). Prices in Türkiye change fast — treat the figures as a guide.

Private dormitories: monthly price by district

District Monthly (TL) Approx. (AZN)
Esenyurt 15,000 – 32,000 510 – 1,090
Avcılar 20,000 – 40,000 680 – 1,360
Şişli 25,000 – 50,000 850 – 1,700
Fatih 30,000 – 40,000 1,020 – 1,360
Kadıköy 30,000 – 50,000 1,020 – 1,700
Beşiktaş 36,000 – 76,000 1,220 – 2,580

Overall, private dorms in Istanbul cost mostly 25,000 – 76,000 TL a month in 2026–2027, up from 17,000 – 58,000 TL a year earlier. Cheap options are usually shared rooms (for example a 6-person room in Avcılar ~21,000 TL); a single room in Maslak or Şişli can reach 55,000 – 80,000 TL.

Watch out for: - Dinner is not always included — it can add 300–400 TL a day. - Contracts are usually for 10 months; some ask for up to 40% upfront. - Laundry may not be free (extra washes 100–500 TL).

State dormitories (KYK)

KYK dorms are very cheap (750 – 1,600 TL a month last year) but are mainly for Turkish citizens. International students usually get a state dorm place only as Türkiye Scholarships holders. More: Türkiye Scholarships 2027.

Transport

Students travel at a discount with the öğrenci İstanbulkart. At 2026 prices the monthly student pass is 593 TL (~20 AZN) and a single ride is 20.50 TL. It covers metro, metrobus, buses, Marmaray and ferries. You need to be registered as a student at your university to get the card.

6 tips to save money

  1. Live close to campus. Commuting time and money add up; if your campus is in Avcılar, Esenyurt or Beylikdüzü, dorms there are also cheaper.
  2. Ask about the university's partner dorms. Many private universities have discounted agreements.
  3. A shared room can be 2–3 times cheaper than a single.
  4. A dorm with meals included usually works out cheaper by the end of the month.
  5. The university canteen is much cheaper than city cafés.
  6. Get your student card in the first week — full-fare rides add up quickly.

What about Ankara, İzmir and other cities?

Ankara and İzmir are close to Istanbul (Ankara from 20,000 TL, İzmir 22,000 – 65,000 TL), while dorms in Eskişehir and Konya start at 10,000 – 15,000 TL. Living costs in Northern Cyprus are also usually lower than in Istanbul. More on cities: Istanbul, Ankara or İzmir?
