Arriving in Türkiye as a student: visa, residence permit and first steps
A practical guide for students from Azerbaijan: visa-free entry, the student residence permit (ikamet), health insurance and a first-week checklist.
You've got your offer letter — congratulations! The next question is how to travel to Türkiye and stay there legally. Here are the key steps.
Do you need a visa?
Azerbaijan and Türkiye have a visa-free regime, so Azerbaijani citizens can enter Türkiye without a visa. Visa-free stays are limited in length, though, so for the duration of your studies you need a student residence permit (öğrenci ikamet izni).
How do you get a student residence permit?
- Register at the university. After you arrive, register at the international office and get your student certificate (öğrenci belgesi).
- Apply online. Fill in the application on the e-İkamet system and book an appointment.
- Documents. Usually your passport, student certificate, photos, address details and health insurance.
- Appointment. Take your documents to the migration office on the booked date. The card is then posted to your address.
Apply as soon as possible after arriving — before your visa-free period ends. Requirements change from time to time, so always double-check with your university's international office.
Health insurance
Health insurance is required for the residence permit. Some universities offer their own insurance package; at others you'll need a private policy.
First-week checklist
- Copies of your passport and offer letter
- Original school certificate and translation
- A few passport-size photos
- Accommodation (dorm or rental) — easier to arrange in advance
- A local SIM card and a bank card
