Studying in English in Turkey: do you need IELTS, and what is the prep year?
English-taught bachelor's programs in Turkey, IELTS/TOEFL requirements, the preparatory year if you have no certificate, and how fees compare with Turkish-taught programs.
You don't need Turkish to study in Turkey. Roughly half of the bachelor's programs on our site — more than 1,100 — are taught fully in English.
Are English programs more expensive?
Slightly. Median yearly bachelor's fee:
- English-taught: ~$4,800
- Turkish-taught: ~$4,000
Is IELTS or TOEFL required?
No. There are two routes:
- You have a certificate — universities usually ask for around IELTS 5.5–6.5 or TOEFL iBT 65–80 (it varies by university and program). You then start directly in year 1.
- You don't — you take the university's own English exam. If you don't pass, you join the preparatory year (prep school).
How does the prep year work?
- Usually one academic year
- Intensive English, many hours a week
- Pass the final exam and you move on to year 1
- Some universities charge for it separately; others include it in the fee
